Alewife

Alewife are a species of Herring, they are a great little multipurpose fish, in that they are used for a food for people and their pet fish also, in fact if you have tropical fish, or even goldfish, a glance of your fish food's label will probably state 'fish meal', or 'dried fish', there is a great chance that this is alewife, or at least a part of it. A lot of people like to eat fresh, fried alewife, while others love them dried, smoked and salted.

Alewife thrive well in saltwater as well as inland freshwater streams and rivers. Commercial fishing of alewife is done with boats and nets, which is called trawling. Alewife mostly travel in large schools which may contain thousands of them swimming close together, the boaters use onboard equipment such as sonar and other tools, to locate large schools, then drop their nets to trap a huge amount of them. In late spring to early summer, the alewife will move into freshwater streams and other inland waters to spawn.

When fishing for alewife with a fishing pole, some tips to keep in mind are, they tend to forage closer to shore for food around dawn and dusk. When using live bait, they love feeding on small shrimp, fish eggs such as salmon eggs, and small crayfish.
