Atlantic Sturgeon
Atlantic Sturgeon are monsters, in fact they date back to the days of the dinosaurs. They often reach a giant size of over 6 feet in length, and cay way several hundred pounds.
There monstrous size and fighting abilities make them a prized possession for many anglers to have mounted and hung on the walls of their office or den, for others to see. Their meat is very tasty, and their eggs makes a great treat as caviar.
Atlantic Sturgeon are protected by plates that act like armor over the majority of their bodies. The area below their mouths contain whiskers that resemble those of a catfish.
They have tails that resemble those of a shark, and the majority of their body color is dark grey to bluish black in color, and their bottom areas are mostly cream in color, depending upon water conditions such as algae count and the main food source for the fish.
Atlantic Sturgeon mostly live in the Atlantic Ocean as their name implies, but during breeding and spawning, their range increases to rivers, channels and bays. When pole fishing for Atlantic Sturgeon, keep in mind you are going after a monster, one that can only be caught on heavy duty gear, you need a rod and reel and line, that can hold an alligator in comparison, and one that will fight with all of it's might.
Some anglers have spent several hours reeling in Atlantic Sturgeon, and have needed a rod anchor as well as a seat belt type strap to keep themselves from being pulled out of the boat by the huge fish.
Many anglers have reported much success when fishing for Atlantic Sturgeon by using nightcrawlers and large gobs of worms, and even bait fish cut into chunks. They are mostly a bottom feeding fish, so when fishing for them, use a sinker to keep your bait on the bottom of the water they occupy, where they forage for food.
