Bluefish
Bluefish are a fish that to me have a slightly misleading name, I mean if you hear someone say they caught a Bluefish what do you think of, a fish that is mostly a bluish color, will in this case you would be wrong. Some Bluefish have a nice bluish color near the top area of their main body, and yet some others have a very slight blue tint or hue over the upper half of their body, but that's about it.
The majority of Bluefish, are not mostly blue at all, in fact their main color is silvery white to chalky silver in color, with a little blue towards the very top area of their body.
Bluefish can grow to be a nice sized fish, in fact it's not rare to land one that is in the 35 pound range or even a little heavier. They have small, but very sharp teeth and a strong, nasty bite, so an angler must use caution when removing a hook or lure from their mouths or whenever handling them.
Bluefish are very much warriors, and are a great sports fish for anglers to catch, they will fight to the death when hooked, and if not dead when brought aboard, they will still try their best to inflict some damage with their sharp teeth.
When you go fishing for Bluefish, you must remember them sharp teeth and their aggressiveness, and use a long steel leader, because they will easily cut any normal fishing line. Bluefish are a very good tasting fish, which along with their fighting ability, helps make them a prized catch for anglers, restaurant owners and others.
Bluefish tend to travel in schools, and as the water warms during the summer months, they often venture pretty close to shores, and as the cooler seasons and colder water temperature occurs, they will tend to head out to more deeper areas, or congregate where the water temperature stays a little warmer.
Bluefish can have a nice long life as far as fish go, if not caught or killed by predators, they have been known to live to be over 10 years old.
When fishing for Bluefish using bait, they tend to eat and strike with a vengeance at numerous bait, but some of the best seems to be; squid, shrimp, eels and all smaller baitfish that normally live in the same waters as the Bluefish do, and it does not seem to matter if the bait if live or dead, as the Bluefish feed with a great excitement, and will rapidly prey on bait that is cut into strips or chunks, as much as they like fresh bait.
When fishing for Bluefish using lures, this can be extremely exciting and fun for any angler, because of their fighting ability, they often leap out of the water and battle until they have been removed from the lure.
Bluefish are attracted to schools of smaller baitfish, do to the baitfish's movements and the disturbances they may give off in the water, which makes using plugs, spinners, and any other lures that create a rumble, or noise in the water when reeled fast, very effective for catching them.
