Flier
The Flier is a species of the Sunfish family, like the pumpkinseed, red breasted, and other sunfish. The Flier is usually greenish in color, but like other sunfish, water conditions and other such things, can cause it's body to take on other shades of color, such as grey-green. It's belly area is usually tan, or chalkish-white to almost grey-white in color.
Fliers can grow as large a 6 inches or so, and can put up quite a fight for their size, making them a nice little fish to go after with light tackle. Fliers can be caught on small grasshoppers, crickets and worms.
They also make a great fish to catch with poppers, flies, and other panfish lures, if you have some lures you use to catch bluegills, try these same lures in areas where Fliers live. Fliers tend to spawn in March or early April, depending upon where you live, and the water temperature.
Fliers thrive well in warm water, and thus they prefer ponds and lakes to fast moving, colder streams and rivers. They tend to hang around deep, darker areas of the water, and especially love the security of weeds, fallen trees, stumps, bushes, rocks and any other debris.
Masses of them often lie under floating grasses and other weeds. If there are few weeds or debris to hide under or around, they will tend to stay in the deep channels or holes, where it's darker.
