Ice Fishing

There are many different types of fishing which one can engage in. From saltwater to freshwater, there is a little something for everyone who gets involved with the sport of fishing. A particular type of fishing that requires some warm clothing and true patience is ice fishing.

Ice fishing is a unique type of fishing where an individual searches for fish below the depths of the frozen water.

Ice fishing can take place on a variety of water bodies such as ponds, lakes and rivers. Individuals who go ice fishing can do so with or without a manmade shelter to protect them from the cold. The process of ice fishing is not as difficult as it initially may seem to some people. The fisherman will choose a spot on the ice and then prepare the various steps which are needed to begin ice fishing.

The first thing the fisherman needs is a saw or an auger to cut an opening into the ice. From that point on, the fisherman will prepare his fishing apparatus which comes in a few different styles. One can choose from a light fishing rod, tip-ups or a spear in which to catch fish. The fishing rod acts like a fishing rod in regular fishing whereas tip-ups allow the fisherman to fish without having to sit by the hole in the ice the entire time. As for spear fishing, the fisherman must place a lure to attract fish and then stand by the hole waiting to spear the fish that come by. Many individuals like ice fishing because it is a social sport which they can enjoy with others out on the frozen pond, river or lake.

As for the danger aspect, there is a certain risk involved with ice fishing that is not present with fishing on a non-frozen body of water. The individuals who partake in ice fishing must ensure that the water body they are going to be fishing on is solid enough to support them as well as any vehicles or equipment which they bring onto the ice. There are a number of instances each year that involve fishermen drowning while ice fishing. Therefore, it is crucial that individuals know what they are doing and be familiar with the frozen area which they will be fishing on.

Ice fishing is a unique take on the original sport of fishing. For those who do not mind the cold weather and working a little bit to get to the water beneath the ice, fishing of this type might be the perfect hobby to engage in.
