Spotted Gar
Spotted Gar are the smallest species of Gar, but they can still reach a length of almost an yardstick, and a weight of over 5 pounds. Spotted Gar get their name from the dark spots that cover the majority of their body mass, and their mouths are full of some very nasty and sharp teeth that can easily rip flesh and kill other fish.
This species of fish has some very rugged scales on it's body that act like armor plating, helping to protect the fish from other predators.
Spotted Gar can live in a variety of bodies of water, including lakes, streams, large creeks, and rivers. When in rivers and other bodies of water that have flowing current, they seem to prefer hanging out in the calmer areas, and near places that have plenty of water plants, tall grass or other thick vegetation, to forage in.
On bright summer days, they like floating near the surface of the body of water they inhabit, often their upper body areas, rises above the water surface.
When pole fishing for Spotted Gar, and using bait, many anglers have had good luck using medium sized live bait fish, such as panfish, chubs, shiners or any other available live bait fish in sizes ranging from 3 - 6 inches in length.
