Wahoo grow to be pretty big, in fact they can get to be over 6 feet long, and weigh over 75 lbs.
Wahoo is a prized catch to sports fishermen, commercial fishermen and everyday anglers, mostly because of two reasons, the meat of a Wahoo is absolutely delicious, and there probably is not a fish that has a whiter and more flakier meat, and they are real fighters, the strength and speed of a Wahoo make them a real prized catch for sports fishermen. Once hooked they often flee with tremendous speed, often pulling line off a reel so fast, that it makes the reel sing.
When fishing for Wahoo, keep in mind that they prefer deep waters, and you usually need to go out to where the water is over 120 feet deep. Wahoo are usually caught by fast trolling, so you should have an experienced crew and charter boat when going fishing for them.
You will want to use a long steel leader, as their teeth are quite sharp and they will easily cut fishing line. Another thing to note is that Wahoo have a very hard or tough mouth, so you will want to use hooks and lures that are filed very sharp, and are very strong and will not bend easily.
When fishing for Wahoo using bait, many anglers have reported much success when using live baitfish such as; bonito, mackerel, bluefish, scad and really any small baitfish that live in the same area as the Wahoo are feeding, the general size for the baitfish used is in the 5-8 inch range.
Another favorite food of the Wahoo is squid, when using baitfish or squid, they can be dead and cut into strips or chunks, since fishing for Wahoo by trolling fast, the moving of the bait whether live or dead, seems to attract them.
